Candidates for Dentures

It’s estimated that about one-quarter of adults over 65 are missing all of their teeth, making dentures a popular and reliable solution. Dentures are designed to look natural and function dependably, often blending in so well that you may not even realize someone you know is wearing them. If you’re considering dentures, you might be an ideal candidate for this effective tooth replacement option.

To be a suitable candidate for dentures, you should:

  • Want to replace several or all of your missing teeth.
  • Avoid smoking or using tobacco products.
  • Have a healthy jawbone (we can assist you with improving bone health if needed).
  • Not suffer from chronic dry mouth.
  • Be committed to maintaining your dentures with proper home care.
  • Continue regular dental visits for checkups and cleanings, just as you would with natural teeth.

Maintaining your dentures involves regular cleanings and routine dental checkups. Even if your dentures fit perfectly, it’s important to visit your dentist periodically. During your visits, we’ll assess the fit and condition of your dentures, as well as examine your gums, tongue, jaw, and overall oral health. Our focus extends beyond just your dentures—we care about your entire oral well-being.

To Care for Your Dentures at Home:

  • Remove your dentures at night to give your mouth a break.
  • Soak your dentures in warm water, with or without a denture cleanser.
  • Avoid soaking dentures with metal clasps in anything but warm water to prevent damage.
  • Always keep your dentures in water when not in use to prevent them from drying out and warping.
  • Never soak your dentures in hot water, as it can cause warping.
  • With dentures removed, gently clean and massage your gums to maintain good oral health.
  • If a toothbrush feels too harsh on your gums, soften it by running it under warm water or use a clean, damp cloth wrapped around your finger.
  • If you wear partial dentures, continue brushing your natural teeth as usual to maintain overall oral hygiene.
  • Following these steps will help keep your dentures in good condition and your mouth healthy.

Cost of Dentures in North York

The cost of dentures in North York can range from approximately $900 to $3,500 or more for both full and partial dentures, depending on the type and specific needs of each patient. Full-mouth dentures typically cost between $1,800 and $3,500 or higher. For implant-supported dentures, which provide additional stability and comfort, the cost can average around $30,000 as a general estimate. Prices can vary significantly based on the materials used and the complexity of the case.

Several factors influence the cost of dentures, including:

  • The Type of Denture: Full, partial, or implant-supported dentures each have different costs based on materials and design.
  • Preparatory Treatments: Dental extractions or other preparatory procedures may be necessary before receiving dentures, impacting the overall cost.
  • X-Rays: Diagnostic X-rays may be required to assess the condition of your jawbone and gums, adding to the cost.
  • Supportive Implants: If you choose implant-supported dentures for added stability, this will significantly affect the overall price.

Each case is unique, so it’s important to schedule an oral exam with a dentist to assess your specific needs. This evaluation helps us recommend the best treatment options for you and provide a more accurate cost estimate. We’re happy to guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, there are other options for replacing missing teeth. Dental bridges are an effective solution for filling gaps caused by one to three missing teeth. Dental implants can be used to restore any number of missing teeth and provide a stable, long-lasting solution. While implants typically involve a higher initial investment and specific health requirements, they offer a durable and natural-looking alternative to traditional tooth replacement methods.

With proper care and maintenance, dentures typically last between 5 to 10 years. Over time, natural wear and tear, along with changes in your mouth’s shape, may lead to the need for adjustments or a new set of dentures to ensure the best fit and comfort. Regular checkups will help monitor the condition of your dentures and keep them functioning well.

While it’s possible to sleep with your dentures in, it’s generally recommended that you remove them at night. Taking your dentures out allows you to soak and clean them properly, while also giving your gums and jaw a much-needed rest. This nightly routine helps maintain good oral hygiene and extends the life of your dentures.

Properly fitting dentures should feel secure and comfortable. Top dentures should suction snugly to your gums, while bottom dentures should rest comfortably and stay in place without excessive movement. Partial dentures should align well with your natural teeth and remain stable, and implant-supported dentures should snap securely into place. If you have concerns about the fit of your dentures, we encourage you to book an appointment so we can assess and adjust them for optimal comfort and functionality.

Once you’ve adjusted to your dentures, you’ll be able to enjoy most foods. However, certain foods can be tough on your dentures or cause irritation. Hard or sticky foods like caramel, raw carrots, or tough cuts of meat can put undue stress on your dentures. Foods with small particles, like popcorn or seeded crackers, can get trapped and cause discomfort. It’s best to enjoy these types of foods occasionally and with caution to avoid any potential issues.
